Unlocking Focus: Achieving Goals with Discipline

How to Stay Focused and Find Purpose in Business and Career

As a business coach and career coach, I’ve seen how easy it is to get pulled in a million directions, losing sight of our goals and the vision that drives us. This is something I often discuss with my clients, and recently, I’ve been reflecting on how to keep both myself and others focused, especially during times when our ambitions feel out of reach.

When we choose goals to focus on, think about the thing that’s been nagging at you the most. Find something specific that feels within reach and addresses that nagging.

For me, as we go into tax season, I would like to be able to pay my huge tax bill AND come out feeling on top and not behind. For me a stretch goal would be to hit 20k in revenue in the next six weeks. This may seem daunting, but it’s not impossible if we break it down into smaller, more attainable steps. And this is what I encourage my clients to do—whether they're facing a career change or trying to find their purpose. We need to define clear steps toward our goals and stick to them.

Here are the steps I’m focusing on as I move toward this goal:

  1. Exercise and Morning Ritual – Starting the day grounded in self-care is vital. It’s not just about staying physically healthy, but also mentally prepared. For me, skipping my morning ritual leads to burnout. I encourage you to establish a routine that nourishes you so that when opportunities arise, you have the energy to seize them. Don’t drop this step just because you have a big ambitious goal ahead of you.

  2. Reaching Out to Past Clients – Relationships are everything. As a career coach, I tell my clients that success often comes from nurturing existing connections. Whether in business or a career transition, reaching out to people who know your work can open doors you never expected. This feels like an attainable step for me to meet my goal.

  3. Create Content – If people don’t know what you offer, how will they find you? Consistently sharing your expertise helps you stay visible and attracts the right clients or job opportunities. In my business, creating content isn’t optional; it’s a priority. I need to keep this top of mind over these next six weeks.

  4. Get Organized and Manage Your Mind – Having a clear plan and mindset is essential. In any career change or business endeavor, our thoughts can either propel us forward or hold us back. Keep your space and calendar uncluttered, and don’t let doubt or scarcity mentality stop you from making progress.

Now, whether you're thinking about making a career change or trying to find your purpose, the key is to stay focused and intentional. Break your goals down, prioritize your actions, and maintain a mindset of abundance and possibility.
